Moisture meter for concrete DeFelsko Positest CMM
A moisture meter for concrete and screed is a crucial tool on any construction site where floor coverings are to be laid or concrete structures checked. The PosiTest CMM provides professionals with a highly accurate, robust and standard-compliant measuring device that measures the moisture content of concrete non-destructively in accordance with ASTM F2659 . This device combines modern technology with ease of use - ideal for inspectors, site managers and surveyors. Thanks to its eight spring-loaded measuring electrodes, the device always ensures optimum contact with the substrate, even on rough and uneven surfaces. The robust design is dust and waterproof in accordance with protection class IP65, making it particularly resistant and durable - even under demanding operating conditions.
The measuring accuracy is ± 0.5 % of the moisture content in the concrete, with a penetration depth of around 20 mm (0.75 inch). In addition, the device has an integrated 1/4"-20 threaded connection, which enables the connection of an optional telescopic extender for comfortable working while standing.
Three scalable measuring ranges are available for different requirements:
- 0 to 6 % concrete moisture content according to the gravimetric method
- 0 to 4 % according to the carbide method
- 0 to 100 on a relative scale for comparative measurements
With a weight of only 295 g and compact dimensions of 89 × 152 × 38 mm, the PosiTest CMM is easy to transport and ergonomic to handle - an ideal tool for construction and soil professionals who value accuracy and efficiency.

Frequently asked questions about the PosiTest CMM – moisture meter for concrete and screed
Is the PosiTest CMM delivered already calibrated?
Yes, the PosiTest CMM is fully calibrated at the factory and is ready for immediate use. An official test certificate is included, documenting the actual measurement results determined in the calibration laboratory on concrete samples. Calibration is performed gravimetrically – based on the dry weight of the concrete – in accordance with the requirements of standard ASTM F2659.
How is moisture measured with the PosiTest CMM?
The device uses an electronic impedance method to determine the moisture content in the upper approx. 19 mm (¾ inch) of a concrete slab. This measurement is completely non-destructive and provides a meaningful value in seconds in accordance with the ASTM F2659 test method.
Why is it crucial to measure concrete moisture?
Before floor coverings, coatings or other structures are applied to a concrete slab, the residual moisture content must be checked. If the value is too high – above the common limits of, for example, ≤ 75% relative humidity (RH) or ≤ 5% moisture content (MC) – this can cause significant damage in the long term, such as:
- Adhesive failure
- Bubble and wrinkle formation in floor coverings
- Mould or algae growth
- Discolouration and odour formation
A moisture meter for concrete and screed such as the PosiTest CMM helps to identify and avoid these risks at an early stage.
How many measured values can the device store?
The PosiTest CMM has an internal memory that can record up to 200 measurement results. The stored data can be quickly and easily downloaded, analysed and exported using the free PosiSoft Desktop software via a USB cable.
What information is stored for each measurement?
Each stored measurement value is assigned an identification number and documented in all three available measurement units:
- Concrete (0–6%) – determined gravimetrically
- Carbide method (0–4%) – comparable to the CM method
- Relative scale (0–100) – for reference comparisons without direct moisture specification
Which measurement scales are available?
- Concrete scale (0 to 6%) – calibrated based on dry weight analysis
- Carbide method (0 to 4%) – comparable to the calcium carbide method
- Relative scale (0 to 100) – for assessing the relative moisture level
What measurement modes does the PosiTest CMM offer?
- Continuous mode: Real-time display without storage
- Max hold mode: Displays the highest measured value until it is manually saved or reset
- Hold Max and Save mode: Automatically detects stable measured values and saves them independently
How long do the batteries last in continuous operation?
The device is powered by two standard AAA batteries. These provide up to 30 hours of operation, which allows for all-day use on the construction site without any problems.
How can the functionality of the device be checked?
The scope of delivery includes a so-called Check Standard, which can be used to regularly check the measuring accuracy. To do this, simply place the device on the test object and compare the measured value with the specified target value.
Is there software for creating reports?
Yes – with PosiSoft Desktop, the measured values can be easily imported, analysed and inserted into customisable test reports. The software also allows data from other DeFelsko measuring devices such as the PosiTector CMM IS or PosiTector DPM to be combined to create comprehensive reports for building inspections or quality checks.
How often should the PosiTest CMM be recertified?
The device is delivered with a valid test report with no set expiry date. Recertification is not mandatory, but is recommended by many quality-conscious organisations once a year. DeFelsko advises setting intervals individually based on operating conditions and internal quality standards – an annual cycle is a sensible starting point for most users.
